Stop by the Rodel exhibit in the Patron Area at the 2014 TRB  International Conference on Roundabouts in Seattle, WA, April 16-18, 2014, to learn more about Rodel's powerful features!

Rodel is a roundabout-specific analysis tool that allows engineers, planners, and researchers to understand the unique operation and performance of roundabouts. Rodel is preferred for its accuracy and versatility in modeling all types of roundabouts:

  • - Closely-spaced and series of roundabouts
  • - Single-lane to complex multi-lane roundabout geometries
  • - Flared entry designs Right turn bypass lanes

Previous Update: Rodel v1-Win 1.73

March 13, 2013 11:54:11 AM CDT

Rodel v1-Win 1.73 brings stability enhancements and enhanced multi-lane modeling.

Multi-Lane Modeling Enhancements

The original DOS based Rodel treated multi-lane entries as large single-lane entries. This meant that lanes were assumed equally used (lane balance), so equal lane use was necessary for the most accurate results, or when equal lane use utilization was not achieved, then a lane by lane check was necessary to ensure accurate output.

Managing Uncertainty in Traffic Forecasts

April 11, 2012 12:59:32 PM CDT

Shasta View Roundabout Photo

While the uncertainty in capacity estimation has been statistically quantified in Kimber's Equations, demand forecasts are another source of uncertainty that is much less predictable. Future traffic demand is at best a sophisticated guess, based on existing counts, travel demand modeling, and planning judgment as to probable land development. Designers should meet with planning staff to consider and discuss the risk of demand estimation error when developing design schemes.
